![]() The minigames in Nancy Drew can usually be pretty aggravating, but I actually found myself liking the two major ones here. Anja has some interesting background stuff, but she is probably the least engrossing of our main cast. ![]() Renate was fairly inactive throughout the story, but she has her moments. Lukas is supposed to be irritating, but he's actually pretty likable, and his voice acting is pretty solid too. Karl is a delightfully silly presence in the game, along with the phone call character of Markus, who provides quite a bit of comedy with his wonderful dialogue. Some pretty fun and memorable characters here. The locations are also packed with little details that help give sense of life to the Germanic castle. Sure, the deep red and maroon of the hallways can be a bit unsettling, but it's at least more cozy than the dark and foreboding atmosphere of the outdoor courtyard. The castle interior feels simultaneously creepy, yet comforting during your stay there. The layout can be kind of confusing, but Castle Finster and the surrounding areas are very nicely designed. It definitely has problems, and there are stronger entries in the series, but The Captive Curse is a solid Nancy Drew adventure overall.Īs always, we begin with the positive elements: Having played it myself, however, I quite enjoyed The Captive Curse. However, you also won't see it listed among the best, such as The Ghost of Thornton Hall, or Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon. When speaking of this game in particular, many players simply say that it "wasn't bad, but it wasn't all that great either." You won't see The Captive Curse listed among the worst Nancy Drew games, like Shattered Medallion or Ransom of the Seven Ships. My sixth foray into the Nancy Drew series, The Captive Curse has had a reputation among fans as one of the more "okay" entries. I'd still recommend this one to fans of the more difficult games like Curse of Blackmoor, or people who don't mind getting a little frustrated. In short the game gets pretty frustrating when it grinds to a halt, forcing you to run around backtracking and talking to everyone to try to find out what tiny little detail you missed so you can move the plot forward. ![]() Often in Nancy Drew games when you get stuck it's because of a difficult puzzle, not because you can't FIND the next puzzle. Never have I spent so much time meandering around looking for the next thing to do. I wasted hours playing Raid and collecting the extra game cards you can unlock by winning the monster game. On top of that Captive Curse features what is possibly the most addicting and fun minigames in any of the Nancy Drew games. The characters, setting and plot were all wonderful, the game is on the long side so you feel like you've gotten your money's worth, and the maps are huge with plenty of secrets and areas to discover. ![]()
